Example of How to Decline College Acceptance

If you have decided not to accept a college acceptance, it is important to send a polite email to each college that offered you an admission and inform them about your decision. Your email will allow your spot to go to another student waiting for admission.

Below is an example of how to write a decline letter or email. Please use words that you would actually say.

Dear [Admissions Advisor’s Name],

Thank you so much for the admission offer to University Y. However, I plan to accept an offer from a different institution.

I appreciate your time and effort throughout the admission process and am grateful for the opportunity to be considered for admission to your amazing institution.

Best regards,

Nicole Shelley
